How Kwaito became a Global Force

Kwaito has risen up out of South Africa's ghettos to become the international sound of a post-apartheid generation. Spoek Mathambo takes Melissa Bradshaw back to its roots

'I guess I'm the young Prince who's trying to kill his dad, the king, and take over the kingdom. But I've been in exile for a while and now I'm back to take the throne," says Spoek Mathambo, sitting out on the rooftop outside a recording studio in downtown Johannesburg. He is here recording his second album, a followup to last year's Mshini Wam, an amalgam of dubstep, house, electro and hip-hop styles. It will be his first album for the US label Sub Pop, more commonly associated with US indie rock than with Soweto MCs. Dubbed the "Prince of Township Tech" when he released a series of online mixes of local evolutions of South African house music, Mathambo sees himself as an outsider. His exile, he says, has been a creative one; his second album is the one that will win his crown. Though his music is grounded in his South African experience, Mathambo reflects an international trend for underground music to be somehow genreless. "It's 2011," he says. "I think genres are so dead! I'm influenced by so much: I'm as much rap as I am kwaito as I am a metalhead," His words could have come from any aspiring musician in New York or London. South African house music and its indigenous relation, kwaito – the local music Mathambo says he is rediscovering – are a perfect example of how a distinct genre can enter the bloodstream of music worldwide. Since the British label Warp released DJ Mujava's Township Funk in 2008, South African house and kwaito have become a reference point for producers and DJs in the UK and the US. It isn't just an underground thing. By using kwaito (strictly, pantsula) dancers in her video for Run the World (Girls), Beyoncé nods to South African dance culture. Her hyenas also allude to Pieter Hugo, who directed the video for Mathambo's single Control. But Beyoncé's song raised many of the same questions about the appropriation of developing countries' music that Paul Simon faced a quarter of a century ago when he went to South Africa to record Graceland. When a major star enjoys a huge success by employing the sounds of another culture, do the musicians of the source music really benefit? Mathambo is steering clear of those anxieties. "Being a kid from here, you grow up always looking up to foreign music. I never really respected what was happening in South Africa. And then with dance stuff as well. Until realising how South African house and kwaito is some of the best house in the world. Track for track, it's badass." Not only was his love of "international" music common among young South Africans, but kwaito was a product of that love – it was born when two house DJs in Johannesburg, Oskido and Christos, slowed down some house and other records to a tempo of around 110bpm. Oskido and Christos founded the label Kalawa Jazmee in 1992. "I saw at that time a lot of Chicago DJs like Frankie Knuckles, Louie Vega, Marshall Jefferson, were remixing stuff," Oskido says. "That's when the idea of kwaito came through for me. And after we slowed down the beats we started thinking: 'Why can't we put our own lyrics on it? Why can't we write? We are free now!'" From its cobbled-together beginnings, kwaito quickly grew into a South African youth movement that seemed apolitical. As Oskido puts it: "After the release of Nelson Mandela we were tired of singing these political songs. I think we just came up with this idea of talking about things in a way that can relay the message via a dance culture." Mandela, himself, noticed the trend. According to Phindile George, manager of kwaito group Ruffest, a dialogue took place between the early kwaito artists and Mandela after he expressed his disquiet at some kwaito songs. He says the songs in question included Arthur's song Kaffir – an address to a white boss by a domestic worker – and Boom Shaka's revamp of the national anthem. Oskido's act, BOP (Brothers of Peace), also had a hit song about traffic cops who arrested black people in nice cars, believing they had stolen them. Oskido says that, in 1996, he was invited to a meeting with Mandela, organized by the ANC Youth League: "He encouraged us, like, 'Listen, we need to do more positive things on the music,' because he could see that it was becoming big and big." The ANC, he says, then helped kwaito artists by taking them to political rallies where audiences would buy their music after a show. Kwaito's grassroots economy – Oskido talks about selling his own cassettes from the boots of cars – made it the music of a newly empowered generation; and though kwaito came from the townships, artists like Mandoza soon crossed racial barriers. At their sales peak, Oskido's Church Grooves compilations would sell "up to 200,000 copies". Kwaito's content may have been apolitical, but as a movement it embodied emancipation. As Mathambo puts it: "Young black people could start doing whatever they wanted – and they did." These days, some argue kwaito is dead. One reason for its apparent decline is that "international" house music became more and more popular in South Africa. (DJ Clock believes this was partly due to the Africanism movement led by global house producers such as Osunlade and DJ Gregory, and in South Africa by the likes of Black Coffee.) Kwaito producers found their music would be played more often if house DJs could use it in their sets, so they sped up the tempo again. DJ Clock produces a slick, clipped style of the new kwaito. "People think that because it's 125bpm, it's no longer kwaito now, it's house, which it's not!" he says. "I mean, if you can check now – Black Eyed Peas, they used to go at 95bpm, at the time they started their group, but now if you listen they're all 130, 135bpm; they're following the fast house, you understand. But when you listen to Black Eyed Peas it's still Black Eyed Peas!" Clock says the lyrics are more important now, as shown by the music of Mathambo's friend Okmalumkoolkat, an MC and dancer who has an underground hit with London act LV. In Durban, which has stolen the kwaito crown from Johannesburg, a further evolution has taken place in clubbing after-parties, or "morning bangs" ("banging" means being high on ecstasy), where people chant to the music. Okmalumkoolkat translates one chant from Zulu: "I was dreaming I was banging, and I was banging so high I was in the clouds and there was a small radio." While kwaito's main language was initially Tsotsitaal, it is now performed in nearly all of South Africa's languages and dialects. For Ruffest, new stars of Cape Town kwaito, the choice of language is crucial – in the townships around Cape Town, not everyone speaks English, and George says they would be considered bourgeois if they used it too much. But they will use some English in order to go "beyond even South Africa". But for Mathambo, South African language defines kwaito. "I don't really know if kwaito can be in English. That's kind of an important factor." On the other hand, he says, you could slow down Tchaikovsky, chant over it in a South African language, and it would be kwaito. From its borrowed "international" origins, kwaito rose from the end of young South Africans' exile in their own land. If Mathambo returns to the township, while young South Africans such as Clock and Ruffest continue to change kwaito, their music's formal differences might become harder to grasp. And they can all claim the crown of once-dispossessed kings.

She honed her art at open mic sessions and support act outings alongside MC's like Zubz, who was her label mate at groundbreaking hip-hop label Outrageous Records (R.I.P). For those who don’t know what is your hip hop journey...where did you grow up, how did you start, who signed you, who inspired you and what is the Nthabi sound?
Nthabi started rapping from a very young age and has grown a lot from where she started. Born and raised in Pimville Soweto, I've always been inspired by life and all its moments. How would I describe my sound? Straight up Beautiful Music!
So why the title Welcome to Me?
The title Welcome to Me is pretty self-explanatory. I've moved from the place I was at when recording Streets to the lab and that needed to be shared with everyone. I've gone from seeing myself and allowing people to see me as just Nthabi to "Miss Nthabi". I'm not in that cypher and battle head space at the moment and would like to challenge myself further, which is what this album is about. Me going to places I was too afraid to go to before. Letting you know just where I'm at right now and not being afraid to let that reflect in my performances as well.
When did you start recording, who produced, who features on the album?
I started recording the album in 2008 and lost all the material I had recorded in 2009 then around April in 2009 I started working with Instro and we started the album from scratch. It took about 3-4months to finish the entire recording process. It was mainly produced by Instro and features production from DJ Kenzhero, Alias, Battlekat,Helio and Oots. In terms of artists, I worked with Lebo Mashile, MXO, Jazzmen and a lady called Maleh on some of the vocals.
Tell me about some of the tracks? what issues you deal with, what the songs sound like?
Every single one of the tracks was inspired by real life experiences. I didn't hold back on anything. As soon as you play the cd you begin a journey through the life of Nthabi from childhood to now. Most the songs have a lot of live elements to it which was done on purpose so as to move away from the typical Boom Bap sound. It's NOT a Boom Bap or Hardcore Hip Hop album.
Why do you thing your a breath of fresh air for SA hip hop?
Honestly, while recording this album I wasn't thinking "what are heads going to say about this" which was my mentality with the E.P. With Welcome To Me, I was more hands on with everything, which makes the product more personal. Nowadays, it's all about what's hot right now and my album isn't something that will be listened within a certain time frame. I'd like to believe that 50 years from now it would still have the same effect on you as it did when you first heard it. These days, everybody can rap. But, how many people can actually make music? That's what separates me from your average artist. So this album was gonna come out last year right? Then what happened?
Yes it was then we discovered that our family is about to be extended so I had to take time out and focus on fam.
So how has it been beeing a 26 year old mum to a baby boy?
Parenthood, not just motherhood is the most amazing thing that has happened to us. I say “us” because I'm not in it alone. I have a great support system and a great partner who's been there every step of the way.
Whats the great thing about being a mum?
Knowing that I now understand the true meaning of unconditional love and that God loves me enough to bless me with the gift of life. Words can't explain it, it's just overwhelming!
How will you balance bringing out an album and motherhood, and you have a day job right?
Yes I do have a job and luckily my job allows for me to focus on my music as well. If it weren't for the amazing support system I have, I wouldn't be able to do it. I don't believe that motherhood should mean the end of your dreams. Instead, I think it should motivate you even further to succeed. Considering the amount of time I spend on the music, I can't afford for it to not work out ‘coz that would mean my time away from important people in my life was wasted. This is one of the reasons why I take what I do so seriously. Game time is over, I have a family to take care of.
Any songs about babyhood and motherhood on the album?
There are no songs about babyhood or motherhood on the album as I only discovered once the album was set to be released that there is a little person coming to join our world.
Okay back to the music, when is Welcome To Me out, through which label?
It is currently out and will be available in music stores in a few weeks. There will be some copies available at the show tonight. The project was released independently in partnership with Promiseland Entertainment and will be distributed through the music industry cc.

Ladies & Gents meet REASON....
Young, gifted with rap. You’d be forgiven for thinking this is hip-hop artist Sizwe “Reason” Moeketsi’s moniker. Having broken into the music industry as a youngin, this now 23-year-old has a starpower (and longevity) that belies his age. Reason’s come-up is that of most South African rappers: the tall rhyme-spitter started out slaying many an emcee in rap battles. However, it wasn’t always freestyles and battles with this Tembisa-born and Katlehong-raised rapper. With his first mainstream appearance on Gauteng’s popular radio station YFM in 2005, Reason delivered ill jingles on ‘The Unrestricted Freshest Breakfast Show” hosted by the legendary DJ Fresh and side kick Mr.T. The rapper who has been at it since 1999 was also “Emcee of the Month” in March 2006 on YFM’s hip-hop show “Rap Activity” hosted by Lee Kasumba. A regular guest on these famed sessions and a subject of many articles in Hype Magazine, newspapers like The Star, appearances on TV shows like Shiz Niz and a role in SABC 1’s Mthunzini.com, it’s clear Reason is a staple of the industry. His work on YFM saw him form a close musical relationship with hip-hop icon Pro-Verb. The two later collaborated on Pro-Verb’s MaNuScript album on a track titled “Street Music”. Next Reason worked with Zubz, Infa from Skwatta Kamp, Mawe2, Nthabi, Anvils, Maggz, Genocide, Hoodlum and Beats Against Beats on many other projects. Reason enlisted the likes of producers Battlekat, Nyambz and others for his own mixtapes. This rapper’s highly anticipated album, “The Reasoning”, boasts the production talent of Battlekat who brought us Zubz’s “Listener’s Digest”, H2O’s “Amanzi Mmtoti” as well as Instro, Rastic Ras and Ootz The Afronaut. A firm favourite among hip-hop heads, and their girlfriends no doubt, this Art Director by profession is a permanent fixture in hip-hop and believes he was destined for it. By Sivu Nobongoza He introduces himself as Breeze. You get the feeling that you are going to be blown away thus you’re not caught off guard when the feeling of his words beating beneath your wings elevates you to a sublime place. Vuyo Yoko, a young filmmaker and social activist is the creator of the ascension called BIKO’S CHILDREN. The short film documentary which premiered at the V & A Waterfront this past Sunday is Breeze’s way of celebrating and urging young South Africans to remember the great man and visionary utatu ‘Bantu Steve Biko and the revelations he died trying to keep alive for us his children. The doccie deals with the commonly misunderstood movement and teachings of Steve Biko, about his views and ideas on ‘Black Consciousness’ Although it starts and ends in 14 minutes the film depicts just enough to raise questions of why, who and where we are as a youth and as a people. As Breeze so adequately puts it, his doccie is way for people to start looking inside themselves and asking the necessary questions that will liberate and rid them from the mental slavery that is still a very large part of our lives today. Unlike many Biko films, this flick exposes a couple of young people who are at the forefront of the Biko iconology and what they do to keep the icon, father and his legacy alive. It was interesting to hear some of the questions that burnt the lips of viewers who watched the premiere. One young person even went as far is to question whether our current democratic government would ever consider making the 12th September, the day Steve Biko died, a public holiday (a valid question given the sacrifice that was made.) What was also very interesting was, and this I suppose is one of the reasons why this doccie was made, is to how misinterpreted the term ‘Black Consciousness’ is. There was a feeling that people who see the prefix ‘black’ generally feel excluded from these teaching, and thus view Mr. Biko’s works as racially biased. As one woman at the premier gracefully put it; in the 60’s and 70’s ‘Black’ was the term used to describe all people of colour and everything that fell under black as the ethnic identity that hinges on our roots. Without getting into the films political merits, it is my belief that before we find this fearless plateau of thought we need to ask the questions and search for the answers that will set us FREE in the true sense of the word and watch Vuyo Yoko’s film Biko’s Children which will screen one final screening at the V & A Waterfront’s Cinema Nouveau in Cape Town this Sunday the 03rd October at 18h00. “I believe you have an appointment with Mr. Biko legacy this Sunday” A still frame from the doccie, Biko's Children

“Tumi is coming to Evolokxion next month“said a calm BlaqT. Part shocked and part thinking he was trying really hard to get me there. Besides, it all seemed too convenient following his nomination for a Hype Award now Tumi is his guest MC. I had been to the Evolokxion before and quite frankly thought it needed some work. Of course, we all look at things with an air of criticism; like “if I had the opportunity I would do it 10 times better”. But BlaqT always had it that there were improvements on the cards.
Upon my arrival, there wasn’t a crowd there. In fact there was absolutely no one at 2pm when I got there. Except for the guys connecting sound and the attractive young ladies busying themselves. At the back of my mind there was an almost – “Of course this is bound to happen” In the space of 2 hours when I returned it was almost as though the flood gates opened and people spread the word to arrive at exactly the time you weren’t looking.
At 18:30, when we almost expected Tumi to be a no-show he arrives with a familiar face in a red T-shirt and cap twisted to the side. So eighties!
Professionalism in Hip Hop Yes professionalism. Perfecting your craft with as much precision as a jetfighter pilot. The first thing you would have noticed about Tumi was how he respected the crowd. Even though it was a Sunday afternoon, my senses were heightened. And I expected all sorts of things to go wrong. As we have been accustomed to expect from township gigs. His performance surpassed the negative anticipations most people had. You would expect a seasoned artist performing his latest tracks in the township to come with illusions of grandeur. He didn’t. He connected with the crowd. And me, though you shouldn’t tell him I said that.
“Thank you guys for coming, I just landed from Paris and requested the guys to bring me here” was his first statement. He then requested Dj Bionic to raise his microphone levels. Turns out Bionic is the eighties guy he arrived with. That explains the familiarity from the days of Le Club.
Here’s the thing, because it’s for the streets we tend to expect sub-standard performance. We propagate the mediocrity that is only part of the culture and ended up being the precedence. Change expectations Bear with me a little, you are almost done. Because of all the times we have been to events, thinking we are supporting our hood and gave credit where it wasn’t due. It is because of precisely this reason that I walked from there knowing that was R20 well spent.
Evolokxion set themselves extremely high standards that many other events will chase after for long. The rules have changed completely. Unlike before the performances have improved by miles, sound quality was of the highest standard and the critics have an even more challenging feat on their hands.
As for me, I found that gig exceptional.

Before I get on and blah blah blah bout’ anything else… I wanna reflect back on the 2nd Anniversary edition which turned out dope… I wanna thank FiFi & DJ Kenzhero for a dope set… [ya know where it comes from..:) regardless the rest, thnx again] and all them peeps who came through. I’m sure you’ve been peepin on this blog to confirm wus going down… well the 411 is out. im sure you guys have been checking out the mean weather lately, eeh its cold(& im glad we indoors now...)but then aint no stoping us..to headline the June edition… known as one of the most prolific writers in the scene today and yes... it is ZUBZ. As a fan of his work I’m looking forward to his appearance. Good peeps, as I’m jotting this post I realize how far we’ve come and yet there’s still so much to be achieved …only Lord knows. From the initial moment the Evo Lokxion Sundaze idea came into reality, one of the rules was not to do another park jam. Which is why these sessions were held in our fronts and backyards. Where we lived was ideal at the time… and as time went on the number of people increased, that meant we were then forced to find a suitable space and we did that, the Stadium (a.k.a Evo Park). The other thing that needed to be improved upon was the sound, to suit the space and accommodate the bands we brought in. The least said about putting together those productions the better!
But this year a new era has dawn not only for Americans (and the world), but for us too as Evo Lokxionist. We moving to a new venue and we going indoors (that’s means no winter breaks, or it’s hot we can’t come early, Oops the cops this or Rain that…! No) plus R 20 donation as entrance fee... will be asked. I know, already some peeps might not agree to this move. But as one of the curators on board, the issue was a financial muscle to make these events a success. Like it is said that “every generation has its own struggle” and if Evo Lokxion Sundaze is about Change then our struggle today is to be that change in the hood and the scene at large…

Well elections are coming up and that always gets some people excited. You are probably very tired of hearing about politics and politicians, but hopefully not too tired enough of hearing about Africa’s past... The European colonialists had designed colonialism to be a scenario for disaster (I am not sure if we can still blame the situation) and us Africans seem to have helped their efforts. Across the continent, economies are or have collapsed, cities deteriorating, food production declining, diseases inclining. Population growing like weeds, prisons are as overcrowded as the farm lands are empty. Further more absolute poverty, instead of slowing down seems to gain ground. What does any of this have to do with the elections? The answer is EVERYTHING. If we do not participate in choosing a right leader democratically then we might be next to experience autocratic leadership. But don’t fret, don’t fear. It will be REVOLUTIONARY!! “Revolution” is a popular and overworked word in Africa. Almost every president like to think he is either the product or producer of revolution (remember Idi Amin?). Whose fears and paranoia is eventually going to turn him into a man-slaughtering mad beast, who tries to impose his ideals about a glorious utopian country. Or he might be a tribalist and encourage killing of tribes he likes least. That might lead to civil war or even genocide. Where, some American will sell us guns. Then after a while someone will get tired of him, and organise a coup. They get ride of him just as they did Ali Soilih and tries to start afresh. Unfortunately the damage is already done and all the white people have gone to Europe some to Australia. HF Verwoerd is laughing in his grave and you and I are probably dead, because we just happened to be in the wrong tribe in the wrong era. - The weather turns out good after all in the morning, after clouds suggesting a heavy rain just the night before. However the was some drops of what in my native language is called “amathe e’mpukane” (drizzling). At around 3pm personally I could feel the anticipation creeping in considering the excitement built around the line up… and it all lived up to expectations with Veedot setting it off with a performance hard to ignore (especially when he took of his top)… he took us through his latest project “Vagina monologue - the singles" presented on stage with his hype man featuring a very talented vocalist, we couldn’t help notice the potential. That was followed by Hakeem, who represented Ba4za (without crew memebers, you guys owe us one!) but without doubt Hakeem stepped up to represent the crew and he did some damage control with a dope set as promised("dont worry blaq its in good hands" his words exactly!)… his presentation was off the hook (“peeps should look out for the track – “thwantsha Monwana” ooh not forgetting the dance moves that comes with that!). Up next was Jazzmen aka Jazzlee wow so much energy coupled with good music...killer! And our last stage act was Herby Dangerous, aaah my man you blew the massive away… (eesh sorry about that little incident…) when I spoke to Bionic the day before about our stage roll on the phone, I insisted that Herby should be the last act… just as I thought! EvO LokxiOn Sundaze the 13th Edition …..review by Kwanele Sosibo An idea whose time has come is kind of dangerous because it owes its own existence to powers greater than itself. By that I mean EvO lokxiOn Sunday sessions – at least on the surface – kind of just happen as if they are the most natural thing on the universe. Certain innocence pervades them, such that for those few hours, it’s as if God himself is rewriting the history of hip-hop, with Vosloorus as the new Bronx. The masses gathered again on February 3, under the pretext of waving a teary-eyed goodbye to Blk Jks, appropriately, another band whose time has come for their USA tour.

Although we are always urged to arrive early, the truth is the vibe builds late afternoon, which was when the Blk Jks took to the stage, after the crowd was warmed up by DJ BlaQ T, who warmed things up early, dropping joints like Whodini’s Friends and …. The Jks’ set is somewhat of an enigma, as if more improve than a set of carefully calculated songs. But that is just a ploy. As by now their repertoires is all familiar, but best believe songs morph and twist, lose limbs and careen off track. For all their indulgence, complete with the now mandatory noise experiments, the Blks can sense what a crowd needs. The dub excursions, seemingly thrown in to segue into other songs, drew the most frenzied responses. As I was sipping on brew, nature’s call came at the most inopportune moments, when Umzabalazo ( aka Toy Toy Soldier) had the crowd visioning a scene from the turbulent Vosloo of the early 90’s. Corny, I know, but check the second paragraph – history was being rewritten peoples!

With that Blunted Stuntman the guest dj for the day cued up the hard, stripped down breaks. I remember getting down to the raunchy funk of Spank rock’s Bump before he called it quits cause of the rain. It kind of reminded me of Doom’s lyric: “This wreck right here, it aren’t for the faint of heart!” After a (longish) moment of silence, the EvO lokxiOn All Stars got up to their usual tricks, which worked the same kind of magic, mixed in with Badu riding the Dro Leaf riddim. Yo BlaQ how you do that? Wicked satellite. Those boys should do this every week. Cause on the seventh day, God went to Vosloorus. Word!

[Sunday times –October 28 2007 (Page 10)] Hip Is where we at as we lounge on the front of this –roomed house in Khoza street in the middle of Vosloorus.Vosloorus? Yes that other township in joburg.Vosloorus is a township near Boksburg on the East Rand, established in the early 60`s after the generation Before was removed from Stirtonville town (East Rand mini version of Sophia town) because they lived too Close to white people in neighboring areas. So we recline in what is called EvO Lokxion (the evolution in the Lokxion/township).
EvO LokxiOn is a year Old "movement" brought about by the youth of Vosloorus, Everything in this scene from the fashion to the music , is like the past transported to the present.The young "Sistrens" here are duplicating Erykah Badu regal fashion scene by flaunting their long dreadlocked Hair and afros. They also display their large, heavy earrings adorned with symbols of ganja and Africa.Others show off their tight Che Guevara and Bob Marley Tshirts , denim sishweshwe skirts and amadelela (dungarees). The Bohemian males, with the eccentric haircuts, can be spotted wearing large goggles and tight fitting bell bottom hippie pants, laced by belts with large buckles. Their embroidered Chinese print jackets and rainbow stripped Golf shirts are a symbol of all that is associated with "alternative" .the "emcees" have also tagged along in their baggy pants exposing their underwear.
This is not my 1st EvO Lokxion visit. For the past Three months, on the first Sunday of that month, I've been attending these gatherings. when I arrived on the scene I meet up with my new-found friend Jeremiah" Jerry" Kobane – the tall dreadlocked Devotee of this evolution, who greets me in the name of Jah. "You see all these people they maybe here for a good time but this is more that just entertaining ourselves. I wonder if they understand that this can be a space where we have the opportunity to find out who we are," says Kobane In the past events there have been live performances by rapper Zulu Boy, poet PO and the Afro Dub band Impande Core,But this seems that today won't be any. Kwani Experience , the group meant to perform, have cancelled .I'm told that the Afro rock band has done a no-show because its lead vocalist, Nosisi Ngakane has recently left it for a job in Cape town. But this will not stop the proceedings.DJ dR Mtunga MerO stands elevated on the patio, with turntables and mixing gadgets playing his retro-funk and electronic beats as the crowds laze on pavement lawns and sit on fences. As the sunset radiates its orange glow over these dusty streets, the momentum rises. Those who were posing far slowly move closer to the yard, where DJ BlaQ t is spinning back in the day tracks from Blackstar, Fugees and Run DMC. Yet this scene leads to me to wonder whether this is really a movement .is it not a duplication of Soweto's now dead underground culture movement, Black Sunday?Are these movements or are they simply socials where people with common interest come together to have fun? If these events that we define as movements have a tendency to fade into oblivion, should we still define them as such? "We don't know where this is going. Maybe one day the people who are here will wake up and find something that is more Interesting that this. This may not be here in the future. Maybe that is part of the search for our generation .we keep looking for more ways to define ourselves.
